Boris Kustodiev painted this portrait of I.B. Kustodieva with what looks like oil on canvas. The marks are brisk, the picture is built up through these quick touches, the colours are soft and natural, and it has a kind of intimacy like he's just swept in to capture a fleeting moment. Look at the way he’s painted the stripes on the child’s dress. They aren't perfectly straight or evenly spaced, which gives them a sense of movement and life. The colour is thinned, so he's able to apply these gestural strokes and capture the sheen of the fabric. The paint application is thin overall, like it's been rubbed into the canvas allowing the texture of the cloth to come through and contribute to the overall effect. The effect is somewhere between Berthe Morisot and Alex Katz, I think, in terms of its tenderness and the flatness of the forms. What do you think?
