This is Pieter de Jode II’s "Portret van Vittoria della Rovere, gemalin van Ferdinand II," created around 1645. It is made with etching. The portrait is framed by an arched structure, immediately drawing the eye to Vittoria. De Jode employs hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture, creating tonal variations that suggest depth and volume. Note the contrast between the smooth planes of Vittoria’s face and the intricate detailing of her hair, dress and jewellery. The composition divides the visual field symmetrically, emphasizing Vittoria’s status and poise. However, the textures and patterns add visual interest and prevent the image from becoming too rigid. The balance achieved through the organization of lines and shapes makes the image both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating. It is a potent blend of representation and artistic construction.
