Niels Larsen Stevns made this study of plants, including a red clover, probably directly from nature, using pencil or ink on paper. Isn’t it amazing how a few simple lines can capture the essence of a plant? I love the directness, the lack of fuss. You can almost feel the artist’s hand moving across the page, not trying to be perfect, but just exploring the shapes and rhythms of the leaves. There’s a real honesty to the marks, especially in the way the shading is done with these quick, parallel lines. It’s like the artist is thinking out loud, figuring out the form as he goes. It reminds me a bit of Matisse’s drawings – that same sense of capturing the essential form with a minimum of means. But Stevns has his own voice, a kind of quiet attentiveness that makes you want to slow down and really look at the world around you. Ultimately art is just an ongoing conversation, a way of seeing and responding to what's already there.
