Allen Lewis created this photogravure, titled ‘Winter.’ In photogravure, a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue, exposed to a photographic positive, and then etched. The etching depth determines the amount of ink the plate holds, creating the tonal variations in the final print. The texture of the paper, its weight and absorbency, play a crucial role. The paper must be delicate enough to capture the fine details of the etched plate, yet strong enough to withstand the printing process. The pressure of the printing press, the careful inking of the plate, and the precise timing of the print all contribute to the final image. While photography is sometimes seen as purely representational, photogravure reminds us that every image is also a crafted object, the result of skilled labor and material knowledge. By emphasizing the tactile qualities of the print, Lewis elevates a seemingly simple winter scene to a work of art. This approach challenges us to consider the handcraft involved in all forms of image-making.
