Albert Geuppert made this drawing of a metal ladle with colored pencil on paper. What strikes me is the fragility of the drawing. The pencil rendering is so delicate and precise. It reminds me that drawing can be another kind of touch, not unlike the touch of the blacksmith’s hammer on the metal itself. Look at the small dark marks that describe the ladle’s bowl. They create an irregular surface, almost like a map. The way it has been rendered gives the metal a sense of its own history. Each mark, each tiny shift in color, makes the object feel worn, used, and real. This drawing reminds me of the work of Giorgio Morandi, who also found endless inspiration in the humble objects of his studio. The process invites a slower, more attentive way of seeing. It's a reminder that art resides not in the grand gesture, but in the accumulation of small, thoughtful acts.
