This is a calendar page for June 1912, made by Theo van Hoytema. It's printed, but the way the colours are laid down feels so handmade. There's this real tenderness in the marks. The top half shows a colony of gulls, and you can see the soft, muted palette, mostly browns, greens, and creams, gives everything this kind of hazy, dreamy quality. It's like looking at a memory. I love how the gulls are all just chilling, nested amongst the reeds. Then below, there's the calendar itself, framed by these little plants and flowers. Look at that dandelion at the bottom – each seed is like a tiny brushstroke, it's not about perfection, but about capturing the essence. It reminds me a little of the graphic work of Walter Crane, though maybe more restrained. Anyway, it's just a reminder that art is everywhere, even in the most unexpected places. It’s always a conversation, an echo.
