Curatorial notes
This engraving by Johannes Christiaan Bendorp is the title page for the 1829 edition of the Dutch “Muses Almanac”. Printed in Rotterdam, the image depicts a female figure wearing a laurel wreath and classical robes. She leans against a pedestal that bears a coat of arms and supports a lyre, likely symbolizing the Greek muse Erato. At the time, almanacs were popular publications that combined calendars with literary and scientific content, reflecting a desire to educate and entertain the public. This particular almanac catered to a cultivated audience interested in poetry and the arts. What can we learn from the fact that such publications existed? That literary culture in the Netherlands in the 1820s had become accessible enough to produce its own commercial offshoots. To understand the world that produced this image, we might consult historical society records, library archives, and even digitized collections of almanacs themselves. Only then can the social life of this image begin to emerge.
