Lawrence Flynn made this drawing of a Hitchcock chair with what looks like watercolour on paper. It's all about the details, isn’t it? I love how Flynn renders the wood grain, giving the chair a sense of depth and texture. The dark brown is punctuated with these delicate yellow accents. Look at the fruit basket design on the backrest. There’s a beautiful balance between precision and looseness that I find so satisfying. And that woven seat! You can almost feel the texture, can’t you? It's clear Flynn was thinking about the physical qualities of this object. There’s something about this work that reminds me of Charles Demuth, with its clean lines and focus on form. It feels so modern, so fresh, even though the chair itself is traditional. It’s a reminder that art is always in conversation with itself. It’s an ongoing exploration, isn’t it?
