Małgorzata Serwatka made this drawing, Sleep Well, using pencil and mixed media. The mark-making has a searching, tentative quality, as if the artist is feeling her way through a dream. I find my eye drawn to the sleeping figure at the bottom left. The pastel is smudged and blended, giving the face a soft, ethereal glow. This contrasts with the harder, more defined lines of the objects surrounding it, creating a push-pull effect that keeps the eye moving. The color palette is muted, almost monochromatic, which enhances the dreamlike atmosphere. There are moments of brighter color, like the orange mask and the red accents in the background, that jolt you awake a little. This piece reminds me of the surrealist collages of Max Ernst, where disparate elements are brought together to create a new, unexpected reality. Like Ernst, Serwatka seems interested in exploring the subconscious, inviting us to piece together our own interpretations. Art is a conversation, and this piece feels like a quiet but insistent voice in that ongoing dialogue.
