"Lake Chūzenji at Nikkō" is a woodblock print by Japanese artist Hasui Kawase, created in 1930. The print, now housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, depicts a serene lake scene with a mountain in the distance, framed by a vibrant, crimson-hued maple tree. The use of rich, saturated colors and a delicate, detailed style is characteristic of Kawase’s work. The print is a quintessential example of shin-hanga ("new prints"), a style that emerged in Japan in the early 20th century, emphasizing realism and a refined aesthetic.

On back: red seal 参百五拾枚限絶版、第二百二十九號 {sanbyakugojū mai kagiri zeppan, dai nihyakunijūkyū gō} (edition of 350, no. 229); stamp: MADE IN JAPAN. First edition, published by Kawaguchi alone. In the mountains above Nikko is the scenic Lake Chūzenji, a popular destination especially in autumn, as seen here, but also when the cherry blossoms are blooming in spring.
