This preparatory drawing, made for stained glass windows, features a muted palette of grays and browns. I imagine the artist carefully planning each pane, constructing a world of light and color. It’s interesting to see how the artist uses the grid structure to create separate zones. Each rectangle must have been a little world of its own, and I imagine the difficulty of holding all these little worlds in your head at the same time. I sympathize with the artist's challenge. It's like trying to solve a puzzle with a million tiny pieces, each needing to fit perfectly within the overall composition. The way the artist has balanced detailed figuration with geometric patterns creates a lovely harmony between the architectural and the spiritual. We, as artists, are always talking to each other across time and space. Each mark, each decision, is an echo of those who came before and a whisper to those who will follow.
