Bomen 1873

This is a page of sketches titled 'Bomen' or 'Trees' by Johannes Tavenraat. Born in Rotterdam in 1809, Tavenraat came of age in a Netherlands marked by significant political and social upheaval in the aftermath of French occupation and the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These sketches weren't intended as finished artworks, but rather, they capture Tavenraat's observations while in the landscape. You can see the handwritten text in the upper left, a form of note-taking to himself. Consider the Romantic era in which he lived, where nature was seen as a source of sublime inspiration and spiritual truth. Tavenraat was deeply immersed in the artistic and intellectual movements of his time. "The landscape speaks to me in ways that words cannot," he once wrote, "It is in the rustling leaves and the play of light that I find my deepest understanding."
