Kenneth Price created ‘Figurine Cup VI’ as a print with lithography. Price’s work emerged from the artistic milieu of Los Angeles in the 1960s. He moved beyond traditional ceramics, blurring the lines between sculpture and craft. Price was deeply influenced by the aesthetics of Mexican folk art. He often visited Mexico, and the impact of its vibrant colors and forms is evident in his work. This print features a cup-like form, isolated on an ambiguous stage. The red shapes seem to float on a pink and gold patterned background. These elements come together to create a sense of otherworldly beauty and quiet contemplation. The cup in ‘Figurine Cup VI’ is presented as an object of contemplation. Price once said: “I like the idea of the cup, because it’s so basic. Everybody deals with cups.” The artwork takes the mundane object and transforms it into something rich with possibility.
