Here's a page, or back cover, from a book by Robert Frank, a photographer who thought like a painter. It's fascinating, right? An empty page can be so full of meaning! I imagine Frank handling this page, maybe even getting a bit of grease on it from his fingers. The slight discoloration around the edges hints at its age and history, like a whisper of untold stories. The subtle grid underneath makes me think of Agnes Martin and her quiet meditations. What was Frank thinking when he chose to include this? Was he thinking about the end, literally? Did he think of it as a painter thinks of a canvas, a surface to be filled with light and shadow? A place of possibility? Painters are always in conversation, and it makes me wonder what Frank might have been saying to them with this silent, sturdy page. It's a reminder that sometimes the most powerful statements are the ones left unsaid.
