This Rug was made by a Navajo (Diné) artist, and it’s a meditation on lines, colour, and the kind of decisions you make when you’re deep in the process of artmaking. The texture of the wool, you can almost feel it, right? And the slightly irregular widths of the stripes – it’s not about perfect geometry, but more about the rhythm of the hand, the give-and-take of the weaving process. I am drawn to that one steely grey stripe. It's thinner than the others, and it doesn't repeat. It's like a little mistake, or maybe a deliberate disruption, that throws the whole composition off balance in the best way. It makes me think about how in art, and in life, it’s often the unexpected that makes things interesting. This piece reminds me of the work of Anni Albers who explored the potential of weaving as an art form. In the end, this rug is about embracing imperfection, about finding beauty in the handmade, and about the ongoing conversation between artists across time and traditions.
