David P. Willoughby, made this drawing of a thimble case at an unknown date with an unknown medium. The colors here are muted, earthy, and the overall effect feels light. It's a very process-oriented piece, in that you can see the artist building up the image through layers of subtle washes and careful linework. I love the way he renders the texture of the acorn cap, it's so delicate and precise! You can see a similar approach in the little thimble case, with its intricate woven pattern. What strikes me most is the simplicity and directness of the image. It reminds me a little of Agnes Martin's work, in the way it uses subtle variations in color and tone to create a sense of depth and space. Both artists share this idea of capturing a feeling, maybe even a sense of quietness, through minimal means. Ultimately, the artist seems to be celebrating the beauty and craftsmanship of everyday objects.
