Dimensions Overall: 27 1/4 × 19 3/8 × 13 in. (69.2 × 49.2 × 33 cm)

This small rectangular table was made by Léonard Boudin in the 18th century. Look at how the table is designed with its marquetry of contrasting wood veneers that create geometric and curvilinear patterns. Notice the curvaceous cabriole legs. These legs taper and arch outward, ending in delicate, ornamental feet. They create a sense of lightness and elegance, contrasting with the flat rectangular table top. The choice of materials, particularly the use of exotic wood veneers, reflects the opulence and luxury associated with the French Rococo style. Boudin's construction and choice of decorative motifs embodies the aesthetic preferences and cultural values of the period. Note, however, how the rigid lines of the rectangle subvert the curvilinear lines, destabilising meaning, and encouraging re-interpretation.
