"Veel beloven en weinig geven / doet de gekken in vreugde leven" (1845) is a satirical print by an anonymous artist that is currently held in the Rijksmuseum. The print depicts a man standing on a platform, using a trumpet to announce a lottery. He is surrounded by a crowd of people, many of whom seem to be eagerly participating. The man’s message, "Many promises and little giving / make fools live in joy," is a critical commentary on the lottery system and the promises of easy wealth it often promoted. This small-scale print, measuring only 105 mm x 112 mm, highlights the powerful message of satire and the inherent dangers of blind faith in promises of wealth.
