Ellinnot made this print, Naakte vrouw in het zonlicht, maybe without even knowing when. The way the light dapples across the woman’s body, well, that’s all about process, isn't it? Seeing how light shapes form. The texture in the print is remarkable. The shading is achieved through an almost impressionistic use of tiny strokes, and there is a strong tonal contrast in the light and dark areas. Look at the small of her back, see how it curves, and how the light pools there? Ellinnot directs the light with those marks, making it so the woman seems illuminated from within. It reminds me a bit of Whistler's etchings, that same sense of capturing a fleeting moment and the play of light and shadow, but there’s also something very personal here. Art is always an ongoing conversation, with each artist responding to those who came before. There is so much ambiguity held in that etched light.
