Curatorial notes
Arnoud Schaepkens created this print, *Moeder en twee kinderen*, using etching, a medium that allows for detailed lines and tonal variation. Reflecting on the 19th century and the artist’s position within it, we see the print as more than just a depiction of motherhood. It's a tableau framed by the dynamics of domesticity. Consider the era's expectations of women. Motherhood was idealized, yet the realities of child-rearing were often fraught with challenges, particularly for those with limited resources. The mother seems both present and distant, cradling one child while another reaches out. This composition tells a layered story about the complexities of maternal love, the division of attention, and the negotiation of personal identity within the role of mother. It invites us to consider the emotional and societal pressures shaping women's lives in the 1800s.
