This engraving by Gustave Doré depicts Godfrey of Bouillon receiving tribute from conquered Emirs. Made in France in the mid-19th century, it shows a scene from the First Crusade, an event that had enormous repercussions for relations between Europe and the Middle East. Doré's image is interesting for the way it encodes a set of political relationships. Godfrey is shown passively seated, his sword prominently displayed, while the Emirs are in a subservient posture. This reflects a European view of the Crusades, casting the crusaders as noble conquerors. But the orientalist setting, with its emphasis on tents, turbans, and exotic gifts, also speaks to a Western fascination with the "Orient" as a site of mystery, luxury, and, ultimately, domination. Understanding this image requires us to examine the complex history of the Crusades, as well as the ways in which that history has been interpreted and re-interpreted over time. Historical sources like chronicles, maps, and artifacts can provide further insights into the social conditions that shape artistic production, and our understanding of this artwork.
