This is Pieter Dupont’s “Brief aan Pieter Haverkorn van Rijsewijk”, and it’s written in ink on paper. What I love about seeing handwriting is that it’s such a direct trace of a person's movement. Here, the lines are looping and flowing, the letters rising and dipping on the page. Look at how the lines of text seem to float and dance a little, each word connected, pulling the eye across the page. It’s like watching someone’s thoughts unfold in real time. It’s the kind of thing you might see in Cy Twombly's work, that same sense of letting the hand lead the way. Ultimately, it’s about seeing the beauty in something that’s a little bit messy, a little bit imperfect. Because it’s in those imperfections, those little quirks and wobbles, that we find the real humanity. We realize it’s a process, a way of thinking through doing.
