This is a silver gas token from the Gas Company of Nieuwer-Amstel, crafted by 's Rijks Munt. Notice its circular form, an emblem of unity and completeness, subtly disrupted by a purposeful notch. The token presents a study in duality. On one side, a shield with horizontal bars and crosses is encased by the company's name. Opposite, stylized flames rise to meet the words 'Gas Token'. The rigid heraldry contrasts sharply with the fluid, organic lines of the flames. This juxtaposition invites contemplation of how industry intersects with natural forces. The token's function—a pre-payment method for gas—speaks to early urban infrastructures. Yet, the token's design elements move beyond utility. The play of symbols and textures asks us to consider the narratives we construct around energy and the balance between control and chaos.
