Zilveren gaspenning van Gasbedrijf Nieuwer-Amstel c. 1895 - 1950

This silver token, produced by the 's Rijks Munt (the Dutch Royal Mint), was used by the Gasbedrijf Nieuwer-Amstel gas company in the Netherlands. Dating from between 1895 and 1950, the token features a stylized flame design and the company's name on one side, and the company's motto and a shield with four stars on the other side. The token was likely used for paying for gas services and exemplifies the ways in which decorative objects were used in everyday life during this period. The use of the Dutch Royal Mint for such an object speaks to the importance of gas in everyday life during this period.
