Isaac Israels, working at the turn of the 20th century, sketched this "Reclining Female Nude" with pencil, a medium that allowed a great degree of intimacy between the artist, the model, and the paper. Israels belonged to a generation of artists who pushed back against the traditional academic style, choosing to depict everyday life with a focus on naturalism. While, on the one hand, this feels like a move toward realism, we also have to acknowledge that the male gaze dictated many of these images. During this time, the female nude served as a frequent subject, often reflecting the societal views of women as objects of beauty and desire. However, Israels’ loose, almost hurried lines give the sketch an informal quality, as if capturing a private, unguarded moment. Stripped bare, this representation allows us to ponder the power dynamics inherent in the act of observation and representation. What do you see in her expression, in the lines of her body? Is she merely an object, or is there a sense of individuality, of a person beyond the pose?
