This baby carrier was made by Ge-jia Miao, and I’m immediately drawn to the process of its creation. It's clearly a labor of love, an accumulation of tiny marks each building towards a larger, complex pattern. Looking closely, you can see how the texture of the fabric and the stitching create a kind of topography. The repeated geometric shapes are organized in a grid, but it’s not rigid. There's a slight wobble to the lines, giving the whole piece a vibrant, handmade feel. The interplay between the dark reds and purples, offset against the black background, gives the work a visual depth. I notice how the small flower-like motifs, stitched in pink and gray, soften the geometry. There's something so intimate about this object. In my mind, it resonates with the work of someone like Anni Albers, who also elevated textiles to the realm of high art through a dedication to craft and process. Ultimately, this carrier reminds me that art is a conversation, a means of sharing stories and passing on traditions.
