Eileen Agar, born at the close of the 19th century, made "Erotic Landscape" with collage, using varied media and found objects. Agar was part of the British Surrealist movement, a group that sought to unlock the creative potential of the unconscious mind. Here, the figure of a woman in a wide brimmed hat is placed amongst abstracted aquatic shapes and other geometric forms. It's an example of the way in which surrealists were interested in juxtaposing unexpected elements in order to challenge traditional notions of reality and representation. They embraced the irrational and the dreamlike. Agar once said, "I am out to capture chaos." With this collage she invites us to explore a dreamscape where the boundaries of gender, identity, and nature become gloriously blurred. The collage evokes a sense of wonder, inviting us to dive deep into our own subconscious.
