Winston Churchill painted 'View of Chartwell' using oil on canvas. Churchill took up painting relatively late in life, and in doing so, he engaged with a tradition that has often been seen as separate from the world of politics. In this landscape, Chartwell House, the Churchill family home, takes center stage. You can see how the physical qualities of the oil paint, its viscosity and luminosity, contribute to the image's texture and color. Notice the thick impasto of the paint, applied with visible brushstrokes. This gives the scene a sense of depth and immediacy, as if we are standing alongside the artist, observing the landscape. While Churchill was certainly not working to overturn class structures, his artistic practice blurred the boundaries between the private realm of the amateur and the public sphere of political life. By immersing himself in the act of painting, he found solace and renewed purpose, demonstrating the power of craft to transcend social and political divides.
