Jill Baroff's 'Millennium Pair - December 30 and 31' is like two quiet meditations on the passage of time, marked by these delicate, hazy red lines on what looks like a raw canvas. I can almost feel Jill standing there, patiently applying these washes, building up layers of subtle color. It makes me wonder, what was she thinking about as the millennium turned? Was she feeling hopeful, anxious, or just plain curious? I feel a deep sense of connection with Jill and her practice – I can see myself in her studio, brush in hand, trying to capture something ephemeral on a surface. The thinness of the paint, combined with the grid, lends the works this map-like quality, as if tracing a journey or the intersection of moments. These paintings really speak to how artists, like Jill and myself, are in this ongoing conversation. We're constantly responding to each other's ideas, pushing the boundaries of what painting can be.
