Editor: So, this is “Plenty,” an engraving from 1800, currently at the Met. It feels like a classical allegory. What strikes me is the emphasis on *abundance* but in a very structured, almost industrial way. What do you see in it? Curator: Well, given that it's an engraving, it’s key to consider the labour involved. Think about the artisan meticulously carving that plate – the physical effort to create the *image* of plenty, a time-consuming process in stark contrast to the instant gratification promised by 'plenty' itself. Do you think there’s an inherent tension there? Editor: Absolutely. The image promotes a feeling of ease but it certainly took great labor and artistry to arrive here. And it's reproducible, so how did engravings shape ideas of "plenty" or wealth during the period? Was it about actual, accessible plenty for everyone, or more a demonstration of status? Curator: Good question! It's definitely linked to accessibility and consumption. Engravings like this circulated widely, bringing imagery, that might otherwise be limited to the wealthy, into more homes. This image would reinforce the social and economic structures. But this creates a complex issue around material accessibility; while everyone may have seen it, were they reaping its benefits equally? Editor: That's a very good point, it’s about access to an image of prosperity and not necessarily its fruits, per se. Curator: Exactly! So, instead of asking about beauty or meaning, perhaps we should be asking, "Who had access to the material plenty, and who was left only with the image?" It gives us more material context and shifts our analysis, don’t you think? Editor: That’s changed my understanding a lot. Thank you!
