Zinaida Serebriakova created this oil on canvas painting, “Collioure. Katia on the Terrace,” in 1930. Oil paint is traditionally made by combining colored pigments with linseed oil. This allows for smooth blending, and subtle gradations of tone, which you can see in the rendering of Katia’s skin and clothing, or the still life elements. The canvas support also plays a role; its slightly textured surface catches the brushstrokes, adding depth and visual interest to the composition. Serebriakova's choice of oil and canvas connects her to a long history of European painting. Yet she also brings a fresh perspective to the medium, employing it here for a modern treatment of portraiture. By emphasizing materials and processes, we recognize both the historical connections and the artist’s individual contribution to this ongoing conversation.
