Editor: This is a coin of Bertyus under Gordian III Africanus, currently held at the Harvard Art Museums. It's quite weathered, but I'm struck by the detail of what seems to be a structure on one side. What catches your eye about its composition? Curator: I note the bilateral symmetry of the depicted structure. The vertical lines create a sense of order, counteracted by the coin's circular form which softens the architectural rigidity. Editor: Interesting. So the shape and the image play against each other. Curator: Precisely. The coin’s materiality, its weight and texture, also communicate power and permanence which contrasts with the wear from circulation. Editor: I see what you mean, the decay adds another layer to its message. Thanks for your insights! Curator: You're welcome. It is always rewarding to look closely at the elements and structure.
