Louis Marvy made this print, "House Hidden Among Trees" using etching. Marvy was active in France in the mid-19th century during a period marked by rapid social and economic changes brought about by industrialization and urbanization. At first glance, this etching seems like a simple depiction of a rural landscape, but it also invites us to consider the concept of shelter and refuge. The house, obscured by the thicket of trees, becomes a symbol of privacy. In a world increasingly defined by public life and social interactions, a hidden home can provide a sanctuary. What does it mean to seek shelter? To what extent is it available to all? It speaks to a universal longing for safety and security, but also hints at the disparities in access to such fundamental needs.
