"Jager en jageres," or "Hunter and Huntress," is a small etching by Cornelius Heinrich Hemerich. The print depicts a man reclining on a stone structure and a woman standing, both with hunting staffs, accompanied by two dogs. The artwork presents an interesting view into gender roles and social class during the time it was made. While hunting was a common aristocratic pastime, the depiction of a woman participating invites us to consider shifting gender dynamics. The figures appear to be of the upper class, indicated by their clothing and leisurely activity, yet the print allows for a consideration of how class identity is performed through leisure. The print evokes a sense of idealized pastoral life, but perhaps also hints at underlying social tensions related to gender and class. It’s as if Hemerich subtly acknowledges the complexities of identity within the seemingly straightforward scene.
