Entity 2002
Dimensions 12 x 10.6 cm (4 3/4 x 4 3/16 in.)
Curator: So this is Allyson Strafella's work, “Entity”, here at the Harvard Art Museums. Editor: It looks like a scrap, something pulled from the earth or recovered from the sea. It is so small. Curator: Well, yes, it’s quite intimate in scale, isn't it? About 12 by 10 centimeters. But look at the weave, the way the color pools and shifts... It almost feels like a map, a fragment of some lost world. Editor: The materiality is fascinating; the obvious labor in this grid-like weaving is quite stunning. I wonder what kind of tools and processes were involved to achieve such detail? Curator: It’s a testament to finding beauty in the overlooked, isn’t it? A reminder that even the smallest things can hold immense depth. Editor: Absolutely. It prompts us to consider the value we place on materials and the hidden stories embedded within them.
