Curator: This is Patrick Caulfield's "Brown Jug," held in the Tate Collections. Editor: It's deceptively simple, isn't it? A flat, almost cartoon-like image, yet something about the color choices evokes a strange sort of warmth. Curator: Precisely! Caulfield's use of bold outlines and flat planes owes much to Pop Art, but he infuses it with a more introspective quality. The jug, a vessel, becomes a symbol of containment. Editor: It feels like a memory, distilled and slightly faded. The brown fading into that peachy color makes me think of summertime cocktails. Curator: The jug is a universal object, referencing centuries of domestic life. Caulfield strips it down, making us consider the object's symbolic weight in a contemporary context. Editor: I love how the ordinariness morphs into something quite…arresting. I find myself strangely drawn to this brown jug. Curator: Caulfield invites us to question the everyday and find significance in simplicity. Editor: It's a brilliant reminder that even the most humble objects can hold a universe of feeling.

Caulfield's simplified, deliberately cartoon-like style makes no claims to a 'realistic' depiction of objects. Instead, through his work, Caulfied invites us to consider the nature of representation. The 'Jugs' have been radically reduced to a simple black outline, with planes of colour to represent light and shading, and yet they remain distinctly recognisable. Gallery label, August 2004
