Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe, his wife, by using light and shadow to define her form and character. It’s a bit like a drawing with light. I wonder what it was like for him to capture this image. What was he hoping to say about O’Keeffe as a person and an artist? She looks like she is caught between moods. Her face is soft, but there's strength in her eyes and a firm set to her lips. The high contrast pulls our attention to her face. Photography is a different kind of art to painting, yet like painting, a photograph can reveal an essence. Stieglitz has captured O’Keeffe in such a way that, as a painter, I feel an intimate connection with her. It reminds me that every artwork emerges from a unique perspective and creative exchange, which is pretty cool.
