Here we see Hans Makart's painting *Leonardo da Vinci*. The mural fragment presents a vivid composition: a reclining nude contrasted with a seated, robed figure against a gold background. This bold juxtaposition of sensuality and intellect, of warm flesh tones against the cool, metallic backdrop, is immediately striking. Makart uses the nude as a semiotic signifier. Positioned below Da Vinci she embodies the traditional muse, passive, and waiting to be inscribed upon. However, the knowing look in the muse's eyes destabilizes this paradigm. The muse is both an inspiration and a silent collaborator in the creative process challenging conventional assumptions about power and artistic creation. Through his adept handling of light and shadow, Makart creates a dynamic interplay of visibility and concealment. The work invites us to reflect on how images are constructed, consumed, and interpreted, and how these processes can challenge existing hierarchies. Ultimately, it is this interplay of form and content, of surface and depth that elevates "Leonardo da Vinci" beyond mere representation.
