Bartholomeus Barbiers made this landscape drawing with figures using pen and brown ink, and brush and brown wash. The technique is fascinating; the artist has built up the image through layers of translucent ink wash. Notice how the washes define the depth of the scenery, bringing out the textural richness of the trees. With controlled strokes, Barbiers has captured the essence of the landscape. The detailed, skilled technique would have required intense labor. In its time, a drawing like this would have been highly valued for its aesthetic qualities and for demonstrating the artist's mastery of his craft. Although it may seem like a humble scene, it required incredible skill and attention to detail, elevating it beyond mere utility and into the realm of fine art.
