Antonio Zucchi created this watercolor and graphite drawing called Classical Portico with Figures in Ancient Dress at an unknown date. The architecture and figures are built up with fine strokes of graphite, with watercolor washes to add depth and shadow. These materials are relatively modest. This wasn't a costly commission on canvas, but rather a drawing on paper, probably made in preparation for another project. Consider the labor involved: Zucchi would have had to grind his pigments by hand, combining them with a binder to create his watercolor paints. The paper itself would have been handmade, likely from linen rags. And of course, the architecture he depicted also resulted from countless hours of material extraction, quarrying, carving, and construction. In the late 18th century, there was a widespread fascination with antiquity. The drawing, therefore, reflects a social context deeply invested in the revival of classical forms and ideals. Paying attention to the materiality and production methods opens up fresh perspectives on the cultural values embedded in the artwork.
