His work is deeply intertwined with a critical look at American society, challenging the post-war idealized images. How do you think the format itself—the grid of images, the visible film edges—contributes to this narrative? Editor: I hadn't considered that! I guess the rawness makes it feel more like a collection of fragments, like snapshots of real, imperfect moments. It feels more authentic and vulnerable. Curator: Precisely. And think about the subjects he chooses. Frank often focused on marginalized communities, questioning power structures and highlighting the experiences of those often overlooked. Does seeing the variety of shots on the contact sheet – some of what seems like wealthy diners and other shots that are hard to parse – lead you to a greater awareness of those issues? Editor: I suppose I’m seeing a stark contrast between the wealth of some scenes and a more gritty reality elsewhere, but the exact narratives remain elusive because of the AI processing blurring out many of the details.. It pushes me to think about what Frank was trying to say about America through these diverse subjects. I’m fascinated by this contrast, almost like a critique. Thank you, that was insightful!
