This skirt was made by an artist from the Ndebele community, using hide and glass beads. The skirt's design is created by carefully stitching beads onto a leather base. Its impact hinges on the contrast between the soft, matte texture of the hide and the shimmering beads. The geometric patterns, formed by the arrangement of the beads, are significant in Ndebele art as they express cultural identity and personal expression. The processes involved – tanning the hide, selecting and arranging beads, and the labor-intensive stitching – all contribute to the skirt’s social meaning. This kind of beadwork became prominent in the late 19th century, partly due to the trade of glass beads. The presence of these imported materials points to complex cultural exchanges. Ultimately, understanding the artistry involved, the cultural context, and the global networks through which materials traveled, enriches our appreciation of this garment.
