"Hataori in Shiobara" is a woodblock print by renowned Japanese artist Hasui Kawase, created in 1946. This evocative work depicts a nighttime scene in the Shiobara region of Japan, where a small cluster of houses nestled amidst snow-covered hills is bathed in the cool blue light of the moon. The use of delicate lines and subtle tonal variations evokes the tranquil atmosphere of a winter evening. The print is a masterpiece of *shin-hanga*, a style of Japanese woodblock printing that emerged in the early 20th century, known for its emphasis on realistic depiction and fine detail.
Comments
The village of Shiobara in northern Tochigi Prefecture, famous for its hot springs, seems to have been one of Hasui’s favorite places. He featured it in eleven designs between 1918 and 1955.
