Hasui Kawase made this print of Shiobara in the snow using woodblocks—imagine carving those delicate lines for the snow! There’s something about the cool blues and whites that just pulls you into that cold, snowy night. I wonder what Kawase was thinking as he worked on this? Maybe he was remembering a quiet moment during his travels, trying to capture the feeling of stillness that comes with a heavy snowfall. Look at the way he’s balanced the dark, intense blues of the sky with the lighter snow-covered landscape, and the way the golden lights from the windows glow through the falling snow. The textures here are amazing! I love how the diagonal marks suggest a sense of depth and movement, making it feel as though you’re standing right there, watching the snow fall. You know, artists like Kawase were really talking to each other across time and place. They're constantly borrowing, transforming, and keeping the conversation going, inspiring each other to see the world in new ways. This print reminds us that art isn't about finding one right answer but embracing the questions.

The village of Shiobara in northern Tochigi Prefecture, famous for its hot springs, seems to have been one of Hasui’s favorite places. He featured it in eleven designs between 1918 and 1955.
