Editor: This is Barnett Freedman’s *Street Scene*, currently undated. It’s a large oil painting showing quite a bustling street, and the figures seem really self-absorbed. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I’m struck by how Freedman captures the social dynamics of the interwar period. Notice how the composition divides the figures - a mix of classes are depicted. How does the painting portray the public space as a stage for social interaction and observation? Editor: It almost feels staged, especially with the figures looking out from the windows above. Curator: Precisely. The windows act as theatre boxes, framing the scene. Freedman often explored the role of public imagery and display in shaping social perceptions. What do you make of the violinist on the left? Editor: He seems separate, almost like a commentator on the scene. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure.
