Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis coaxed this "Creation of the World II" out of paint, sometime before 1911. Look how the pigment has been massaged into the canvas, a gentle, swirling cosmos emerging from the violet abyss. There is a real push and pull here – the dark, brooding hues struggling with the nascent light. It's as if Ciurlionis is showing us not just the act of creation, but the resistance, the inherent difficulty in bringing something from nothing. That central spot, a tiny fleck within the pale orb, could be the artist’s hand print, a divine accident. You can see him searching, feeling, finding his way through the paint, much like Albert Pinkham Ryder, another artist who conjured vast, mysterious worlds from humble materials. Both artists remind us that art is not about perfect rendering but embracing the mess and mystery of existence.
