This is "Invisible Painting" by Bruno Jakob, who was born in Switzerland in 1954. It is not made with conventional materials. It is made with an absence, with the premise of something not being there. Jakob is known for his conceptual works, many of which play with perception and challenge our traditional understanding of art. Here, the idea of invisibility invites a host of considerations. What does it mean to create something that cannot be seen? What role does language play when we call this "something" a painting? The idea of the invisible has deep connections with marginalized identities. Historically, certain groups of people have been made invisible by those in power through systemic oppression. The title “Invisible Painting” prompts us to consider these connections and to ask ourselves how we, as viewers, participate in acts of seeing and not seeing. This is not an easy work, as it asks us to think about what we bring to art, and how we imagine what is not readily apparent.
