This is a photograph of sailing boats, moored at the water's edge, by G. Hidderley. I imagine the artist standing by the water's edge, waiting for the right moment to capture the scene. There’s a feeling of stillness, a soft light that makes the water look like liquid metal. It must have been peaceful, even meditative, watching the boats bob gently in the water. I wonder what Hidderley was thinking about as they looked through the lens? Maybe they were contemplating the lives of the sailors, or the rhythm of the tides. It reminds me of other seascapes by artists like Turner, who also tried to capture the sublime power of the sea. Each artist is in conversation with those who came before, building on their legacy. Art is like that: it embraces uncertainty and multiple meanings. It is a reminder that there’s always more than one way to see the world.
