This color print shows the Kremlin in Moscow as seen from across the Moskva river. Because the artist is unknown, it is hard to say with certainty when or why this image was made. We can however make some educated guesses. The work would have been made for a Western European or American audience who were fascinated by Russia. The grand architecture of the Kremlin, the seat of both political and religious power, became an important symbol of Russia. This in turn made it a popular subject of paintings and prints. The creation of color prints required specialized knowledge of photography and printing. Further research into the history of color printing in Europe may help us to identify the image's maker and understand its purpose more fully. In the meantime, we can appreciate this print as a window into how Russia presented itself to the world.
