This is Maria Vos’s pencil drawing, "Haan en kippen," which translates to "Rooster and Hens." Vos made this sketch during the 19th century, a time when women artists navigated a male-dominated art world, often focusing on domestic and still life subjects. Vos, who never married, lived in both the Netherlands and on the Italian coast. Living and working between these two locations allowed Vos to develop her artistic style, creating an interesting dialogue between the traditional Dutch style and new landscapes. These pencil sketches offer an intimate glimpse into the artist's study of form and movement. The chickens are captured in simple, fleeting moments. Vos does not seem to be interested in the kind of still life depictions commonly associated with women artists of the time. Rather, there is a sense of movement and life, echoing Vos’ own life between different cultures and artistic styles. Vos’ sketch subtly challenges the restrictive expectations placed upon women artists of her time, offering a personal reflection on the world around her.
