As an etching, this work involves a labor-intensive process of engraving an image onto a metal plate, inking it, and then pressing it onto paper. The stark black lines on the light background give it a graphic quality, which is typical of printed images of the time. But notice the level of detail achieved: the textures of the dwarf’s garments, the small bird perched on his hand, the expressions on the faces of the figures in the background. All this demanded considerable skill on the part of the engraver. Considered within the wider social context, etchings like this were often used for satirical or educational purposes. They were relatively affordable and could be mass-produced, making them accessible to a broad audience. This particular piece critiques the medical profession through caricature. Paying attention to the materials, making, and historical context allows us to understand the artwork and its social commentary. It also reminds us of the skilled labor involved in producing what might otherwise be seen as a humble image.
