George Hendrik Breitner created this page of annotations with graphite on paper. The texture of the paper shows through the writing, and the writing appears smudged, which allows us to see the history of its making. The rapid, perhaps even hurried marks, provide insight into Breitner’s working process. These aren’t formal notes, but rather direct impressions and calculations made in the moment, perhaps on site, giving us clues to his thoughts and actions. The artist's hand is evident, showing a moment in time that captures the artist's thought process, marking, and reflecting on the scene. It’s a glimpse into the everyday labor of an artist at work. By presenting these annotations, the museum asks us to value the process of artmaking as much as the final product. It prompts us to reflect on the labor and the often unseen, yet crucial, steps involved in artistic creation.
